Scoreboard Sports Bar and Grill: Your Home for Celtics Playoffs.
The Celtics Playoff Run Starts Tonight.

Well, folks, it's been quite a season for our beloved Celtics, and there is more excitement to come!

Today begins the first of the playoff games against the Atlanta Hawks, which is sure to be a great match up. Out of a total season comprised of 82 games, the two teams are head to head with the exact same standings of 48 wins and 34 losses.

While the Celtics didn't come out on top in the playoffs last season, it taught them how to better prepare for this one.

"We didn't know how to win. Not in the playoffs, at least," writes the team's 27-year-old point guard, Isaiah Thomas, "They're just different than the regular season. When people say that in the playoffs every play counts and every possession is crucial, they're not kidding. It sounds cliche, and it is, but you can't really understand what it means until you're in position to close out a playoff game-- and you get out-executed in the final minutes. You start thinking back to all the little things you could have done differently to change the outcome of the game. An extra pass here, better shot selection there -- it all adds up [...] I was proud of the mindset we had coming out of that series. We lost, but we gained confidence. We came out of it thinking, O.K. That's what it takes to win a playoff series. Now we know."

After taking a few steps back to analyze what worked for them and what didn't, they knew that they needed to come back stronger and more competitive in the opening round this season.

But let's say they still don't win this season, Thomas shares a distinct memory from last year with us that many people don't seem to realize:

"I also came out of that series knowing exactly what it means to play in Boston I'll admit, it took us a while to find the silver linings in getting swept. We still lost four straight, and that's tough to stomach. But when we were walking off the court at the Garden after Game 4, something happened that I had never seen before, anywhere.

The Boston fans got on their feet and started chanting, 'Let's go, Celtics!'

They gave their team, who had just been swept, a standing ovation.

At that moment, I knew that this city was like no other. Even though the season was over, it felt like we were starting something."

Thomas says again, "They say if you win a championship in Boston, you'll be loved forever. And I want every guy on this team to experience that."

But this right here is what separates us Boston fans from every other fan out there. Because if our team wins, we win, but if our team loses, they are still our team-- and we still win because of that.

It's like our dear friend Mr. Ortiz said, "This is OUR F***ING CITY!!!"

So, if you love basketball, if you love Boston, or if you love both, you must know there is no place better than Scoreboard to watch the playoffs. With more than 40 high-definition TV's in addition to our Video Wall, friendly servers, and delicious food, why on Earth would you want to go anywhere else?

Not to mention that if you wear your Celtics gear here during the game, you receive 15% off of your food check!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Boston Globe Sportswriter Dan Shaughnessy Dines at Scoreboard Sports Bar and Grill with Silent Auction Winner Jack Miller

Woburn, Massachusetts – January 26, 2016 – For Boston sports fans, there is no writer more distinguished than the Globe's Dan Shaughnessy. Journalist, columnist, author and television and radio personality, Shaughnessy has most notably been a sportswriter for the Boston Globe for the past 35 years, during which he has been named Massachusetts Sportswriter of the Year eleven times, and voted one of America's top 10 sports columnists by AP Sports Editors nine times.

On December 12, 2015, Scoreboard hosted the 12th annual Ahern Family Charitable Foundation Army-Navy Football Luncheon. This year it benefited the Military Friends Foundation's Operation Santa-Massachusetts, which provides financial assistance to families associated with the Massachusetts National Guard and Reserve. The proceeds were used to provide holiday gift cards to the children of deployed and fallen soldiers. From admission to raffle tickets to silent auction items, the Ahern family and their gracious volunteers raised an outstanding number, as well as awareness and support of the organization itself.

One of the aforementioned silent auction prizes was the chance to come to Scoreboard for dinner with Dan Shaughnessy. Jack Miller, whose business is in Woburn, was the highest bidder and claimed his prize last Wednesday, January 20th.

"Thank you for all the Scoreboard does in supporting this, it is dear to my heart having a Marine Son, who has done 5 tours in the Middle East, 19 years in and now living in Amman Jordan," Miller commented the next day.

"The Ahern Family foundation does such a great job supporting the families of our troops, we consider it a privilege to be the venue of the Army-Navy luncheon," said Frank Vento, General Manager of the Crowne Plaza Boston-Woburn, " and I've been a big fan of Dan Shaughnessy's for years, so it was such an honor to have him join us."

"It was so much fun meeting Dan, I used to read his columns in The Globe growing up. He was so down to earth and easy to talk to!" said Danielle Rogers, the seasoned Scoreboard server who had the pleasure of taking care of Miller and Shaughnessy that night.

WOBURN
For a dozen years, Bob Ahern and his family have made it their mission to help the families of veterans serving overseas and those who have lost their lives.
That tradition will continue Dec. 12 when the Ahern Family Charitable Foundation hosts its 12th annual Army–Navy Football Luncheon at The Scoreboard at The Crowne Plaza in Woburn.
According to Ahern, this year's luncheon will benefit the Military Friends Foundation's Operation Santa-Massachusetts, which provides financial assistance to families associated with the Massachusetts National Guard and Reserve. Proceeds will be used to provide holiday gift cards to children of deployed and fallen soldiers.
Ahern, a native of Arlington, has strong ties to the military and law enforcement. He served in the Army Reserve and the Massachusetts Army National Guard before being honorably discharged in 1991. Those ties run throughout the Ahern family. His father Bo served in Vietnam with the Marines. Brother Steve was also a Marine. He and a second brother, Chris, are officers with the Cambridge Police Department.
In 1992, Ahern began a career in law enforcement, first with the Metropolitan Police Department and later the Massachusetts State Police, where he now serves as the bomb squad commander for the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit at Logan International Airport. While attending the Medal of Honor Convention in Boston earlier that year, he met Tom Lyons, the former executive director of the New England Shelter for Homeless Veterans and currently the director of community services at MassHousing in Boston.
Lyons explained the plight of homeless veterans and Ahern took it to heart.
"I wasn't really aware of that problem. Tom inspired me. There's an old saying, 'You never leave a man behind,' and I believe that," said Ahern. "It never hit me there could me homeless veterans. I didn't put two and two together."
After a discussion with his wife Eileen, what was once a St. Patrick's Day celebration at home became a party on a much larger scale at the Montvale Plaza in Stoneham in 2002. After selling approximately 350 tickets, Ahern raised $10,000 for the New England Shelter for Homeless Veterans.
While the issue of homelessness among veterans has garnered more attention in recent years, more still needs to be done.
"Once we're able to get a veteran into a stable environment and get back on track, we don't just let them go own their own. Now we provide services and help them reunite with their families," Ahern said. "The support services have made a difference."
Advocates are now getting people into more permanent housing and out of shelters at a faster rate.
As a result of his work with Ahern, Lyons said he supports the foundation as much as he can. After U.S. forces entered Afghanistan, Ahern said Reservists and National Guard members were being called to active duty to serve overseas.
"It put a financial strain on families of guardsmen and reservist," he said.
After earning status as a 501(c)(3) charity, the foundation held a St. Patrick's Day gala for the next few years, growing larger each year. The gala is on hiatus until 2017, but the foundation's efforts to care for families of veterans is ongoing.
"We came up with the idea of a less-formal event to supplement the gala," Ahern said.
The result was the first Army-Navy Luncheon in 2004 with about 50 guests. The venue has changed over years, but for the last five years, the luncheon has been held at The Scoreboard.
"We now have as many as 400 to 500 guests, including local TV and radio celebrities and former professional athletes like Terry O'Reilly and Steve Grogan," said Ahern.
This year's guests include two Medal of Honor recipients -- retired Navy Capt. Thomas Kelley and retired Army Staff Sgt. Ryan Pitts.
Grateful
Ahern said he's grateful for the efforts of the Crowne Plaza.
"They're very generous to us. The staff is awesome and they look forward to us coming in every year," he said.
Frank Vento, general manager of the Crowne Plaza, said after Ahern explained what he was doing, he quickly agreed to do what he could, which ended up being donating the venue and luncheon at no cost to the foundation.
"We feel very strongly this is a great cause. It's worthy of people contributing to. They won't have the expense of paying for the food and could donate more to the families," said Vento.
